first snow

mother holle is shaking out her quilt, while old man winter empties his pockets, and behold! the season’s first snow falls, while i gather chard, kale, spinach, and lettuce from the cold frame :0)  we spent a good bit of time building the frame this summer, following the instructions in sam ogden’s organic vegetable growing book, and so far it’s been well worth it.  aside from the aforementioned, i’ve harvested a red cabbage head and there’s still cilantro and dill coming up.  the windows were salvaged from our house when we replaced them, and the glass gets beautifully patterned by frost breath.  i brushed the snow off and covered it up with a canvas tarp to keep all the plants cozy through this cold spell.  then back inside to our cozy hearth, where the wood stove is belly full and red hot.
